Understanding Hints

Hints are there when you need them — a small nudge to get you unstuck without giving away the whole answer. Here's how they work, how to earn them, and when to use one.

What a Hint Does

Using a hint reveals one letter in the answer you're currently working on. You choose when to use it, and you choose which clue to apply it to — Lamplit won't choose for you.

The revealed letter appears in its correct position among the answer slots, lit with a warm amber glow to distinguish it from letters you've typed yourself. From there, it's up to you to complete the rest of the word.

How to Use a Hint

  1. Tap the clue you're stuck on to select it and open the keyboard.

  2. Tap the hint button — shown as a small flame icon near the answer slots. Your hint balance is displayed here.

  3. One letter from the correct answer will illuminate in its correct position. One hint token is deducted from your balance.

  4. Use the revealed letter as your starting point and continue solving the answer.

You can use multiple hints on the same clue. Each hint tap reveals one more letter. Hint tokens deduct one at a time, so you're always in control of how much help you take.

Your Hint Balance

Your current hint balance is always visible in the puzzle view. Hints are shared across all puzzles — they don't reset or refill between sessions automatically.

Earning Free Hints

You don't need to purchase hints to keep a reasonable supply. Lamplit replenishes your hint balance through regular play.

☀️ DAILY PUZZLE

Completing the daily puzzle earns you a small number of hint tokens each day. Come back daily to keep your balance healthy.

📦 PACK PUZZLES

Completing puzzles from your library also contributes hints to your balance. Working through a pack builds up your supply over time.

Buying More Hints

If you run out of hints mid-puzzle, you can purchase a hint bundle from within the app. Bundles are designed to be generous — the intention is to help you keep playing, not to extract money from a stuck moment.

Hint bundles are available in two sizes and can be found by tapping on the hints counter when it reaches zero. They're consumable purchases, meaning they're used up over time and can be repurchased.

Hint bundles are not family shareable (this is an App Store policy for consumable items).

Hints & Leaderboards

Using hints during the daily puzzle is completely fine — it won't disqualify your solve or prevent your time from appearing on the leaderboard. The leaderboard measures how quickly you finished, not whether you needed help along the way.

Common Questions

Can I undo a hint I didn't mean to use?

Hints can't be undone once used — the letter reveal and the token deduction are immediate. If you tapped the hint button by accident, the revealed letter is still valid and can help you complete the clue. Your token will not be refunded.

Does using hints affect Classic Mode?

No. Hints work the same way in both Modern and Classic Mode. They always reveal a letter from the correct answer, regardless of how the clue is written.

What if I've already typed letters in the answer — will the hint still work?

Yes. The hint will reveal a letter in any unrevealed position. If you've already typed some letters correctly, the hint will pick from the remaining blank slots.

Do hints carry over between days?

Yes. Your hint balance persists until you use the tokens. There's no expiry — hints you earn today are still there next week.

I restored my purchases but my hints are gone. What happened?

Hint bundles are consumable purchases and are not restored when you restore your non-consumable purchases (puzzle packs, the one-time unlock). Consumable balance is stored on the device and does not transfer. Non-consumable items — puzzle packs and the library unlock — are always restorable.
