Welcome to Lamplit
Lamplit is an acrostic puzzle game inspired by Victorian-era word puzzles. Whether you're new to acrostics or a seasoned solver, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to start playing.
What Is an Acrostic Puzzle?
An acrostic is a word puzzle where you solve a series of clues, and the first letter of each answer spells out a hidden word — called the spine — when read from top to bottom.
Example — spine word: WEATHER
Letter | Answer | Clue |
W | WHIRLWIND | It picks up Dorothy's house, and leaves chaos in its wake |
E | EQUINOX | Twice a year, day and night agree to share the hours equally |
A | AURORA | A polar light show, painted across the night sky in green and violet |
T | THUNDER | The sky's loud announcement that lightning has just visited |
H | HUMIDITY | The invisible weight that makes a summer day feel twice as hot |
E | EROSION | What wind and rain do to cliffs and canyons, given enough time |
R | RAINBOW | Seven colors that only appear when sun and rain are working together |
As you solve each clue, the spine fills in letter by letter — revealing the hidden word.
How to Play
Starting a Puzzle
When you open a puzzle, you'll see a list of clues, each with a row of blank answer slots and a highlighted spine letter on the side. That spine letter is the first letter of the correct answer, which gives you a useful starting hint.
Entering an Answer
Tap any clue row to select it. A keyboard will appear and you can type your answer. The spine column updates live as you type, so you can watch the hidden word take shape in real time.
Correct Answers
When you enter a correct answer, it locks in with a warm glow animation and a satisfying sound. The corresponding spine letter illuminates, bringing you one step closer to the hidden word.
Incorrect Answers
If your answer is wrong, the clue row will briefly flicker to let you know. The answer clears automatically so you can try again — there's no penalty, just a nudge to reconsider.
Completing a Puzzle
Once all clues are answered correctly, the full spine word glows and a completion screen appears. Take a moment to enjoy it — you've earned it.
Sounds & Haptics
Lamplit is designed to feel as good as it sounds. Here's what to expect:
Moment | Sound & Feel |
Correct answer | Soft, satisfying sound + gentle haptic |
Incorrect answer | Distinct sound + sharp double-tap haptic |
Puzzle complete | Warm completion sound + sustained haptic bloom |
Ambient background | Optional soft crackling fire — creates a cozy atmosphere |
Adjusting Audio & Haptics
You can toggle ambient sound and haptic feedback in Settings. Lamplit always respects your device's silent switch — if your phone is on silent, no sounds will play.
Tips for New Players
Start with the spine letter. Every clue row shows you the first letter of the answer. When you're stuck, that's your starting point.
Watch the spine as you type. If the spine word starts to look familiar as you solve clues, it can help you work backwards to confirm — or reconsider — an answer you're unsure about.
Don't worry about wrong answers. Incorrect guesses clear automatically with no score penalty. Lamplit is about the satisfaction of solving, not punishing mistakes.
Try the ambient sound. The optional crackling fire background makes for a noticeably more immersive experience, especially with headphones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to enter answers in order? No. You can tap any clue in any order. Jump around freely — sometimes solving an easier clue first helps unlock a harder one.
What if I'm completely stuck on a clue? The hint system (coming in a future update) will let you reveal a single letter in your current answer. In the meantime, try revisiting other clues to fill in more spine letters — they often provide useful context.
Why did my answer clear after I submitted it? This means the answer wasn't quite right. Lamplit checks your answer the moment you submit it. Take another look at the clue and give it another try.
Does Lamplit work with my device on silent? Yes. Lamplit respects the system silent switch. When your device is silenced, no audio will play.
